Three groups of residents are eligible for coronavirus vaccines with the process now into its second phase, but Lyon County Public Health is asking residents ages 65 and older to sign up now.
Why’s that? On KVOE’s Newsmaker segment Thursday, Emergency Preparedness Director Jennifer Millbern explained the rationale for vaccinating seniors first.
Millbern has encouraged high-contact critical workers and people in congregate settings to hold off on signing up for the county’s waitlist until more vaccines come in more regularly. She’s also asking residents with medical conditions that could put them in a different phase than their age would suggest to hold off unless they are above age 65. She’s hoping those residents can start getting vaccinated by early March if not sooner.
Residents wanting to get on the county’s vaccination waitlist can call Lyon County Public Health at 620-208-3741 or go online to www.publichealth.lyoncounty.org.
With recent reporting periods showing caseload increases in the 20s for over a week, Millbern is pleased to see that. Millbern also says recent trends have allowed Public Health to shorten the COVID quarantine period from 14 days to 10, even though the incubation period is still 14 days.
The last four reporting periods have seen 22-25 new cases each. Millbern says last week also had a 7.8-percent test positivity rate and 60 new infections, both trending lower than the prior week. This week has seen level or slightly higher numbers.
