USD 253 District staff, board members and students all convened for a special ceremony at Emporia High School Wednesday afternoon.
The district officially broke ground on its third of nine renovation projects as part of the multi-million dollar Building for the Future Bond initiative. The project will see a number of additions to the high school including a new science department, storm shelter, student learning commons areas and updated art and music facilities just to name a few.
USD 253 Board of Education Vice-President Leslie Seeley says it is very exciting for the board to see the long-discussed project coming to fruition.
The groundbreaking was not the only cause of excitement Wednesday, however, as it was announced that the project’s superintendent has a very close link to the Emporia school district. Edi Rangel is leading the crews on the project and is a 2012 graduate of Emporia High School and Emporia native.
Rangel also graduated from Flint Hills Technical College before receiving his bachelor’s degree from Pittsburg State University. Rangel says he is proud to be involved in a project that will affect generations of children and families to come.
The EHS project is the third and final project as part of phase one of the Building for the Future initiative which also includes updates to Walnut Elementary School and the construction of the district’s new Early Learning Facility.
