Emporia firefighters battled a relatively small grass fire in an area with several large-scale manufacturers.
Fire developed near the intersection of Penny Lane and Weaver Street, just north of Hill’s Pet Nutrition and near both Norfolk Iron and Metal and the partly-constructed REG (R-E-G) Emporia plant.
Battalion Chief Tony Fuller says about 10 acres burned. No buildings were touched, but building materials in the burn zone were damaged or destroyed.
The apparent cause is careless discard of smoking materials.
The fire danger is very high across the KVOE listening area for the rest of the day. Osage County has a burn ban up until 8 am Thursday. Wabaunsee County has announced a burn ban until 7 pm Wednesday.
