The Olpe Eagles soared over Madison in back-to-back victories in area high school basketball action Tuesday night.
The Lady Eagles began the night with a dominating 69-15 win over the Lady Bulldogs in the girl’s game. Madison managed to tie Olpe early in the first quarter before a 16-4 run gave Olpe a commanding lead they would never relinquish.
After carrying a 41-7 lead into the half, Olpe would hold Madison to just eight points in the second half to seal the victory. Olpe had four players in double digits and were led by senior Lauryn Broyles with 17. Senior Macey Smith had 14 points, senior Marley Heins added 12 and senior Maya Bishop ended the night with 11.
Coach Jesse Nelson says an energetic start was the key to his team’s win.
Madison was led in scoring by sophomore Yolaine Luthi with six points. Olpe now improves to 11-0 on the season as Madison drops to 4-5.
In the boy’s game, solid second-half shooting gave Olpe a 47-29 victory over Madison.
Olpe would open the scoring with a 4-0 run early in the first quarter and after trading the lead with Madison twice would take a three-point lead into the second. Madison would come within one to tie the game but could not retake the lead as Olpe carried a 19-12 lead into the half.
In the second half, Olpe would shoot 13 of 17 from the floor as they kept their unbeaten streak alive. Olpe was led in scoring by junior Derek Hoelting with 13 points. Fellow junior Damon Redeker added 11 points on the night.
Olpe Head Coach Chris Schmidt says his team got stronger as the game went on.
Madison was led in scoring by junior Drew Stutseman with 10 points.
Olpe now improves to 6-0 on the season as Madison falls to 7-2.
