Lyon County deputies say an Emporia man led a short chase out of town and then crashed Sunday night.
Deputy Zach Shafer says Emporia State Police and Safety tried to stop a car in the 1800 block of Merchant for an alleged traffic infraction just after 9 pm. The driver, later identified as 38-year-old Steven Vincent, instead traveled north on Kansas Highway 99 at speeds allegedly exceeding 90 mph before crashing in the 2000 block of the highway, about two miles north of Emporia’s north city limits.
Vincent was taken to Newman Regional Health by ambulance. He was later transferred by helicopter to Stormont-Vail in Topeka for potentially serious injuries.
Vincent was not wearing his seatbelt when he crashed.
Deputies are investigating the incident.
