“We’re off to a great start.”
Those were the words of USD 243 Lebo Waverly Superintendent Corey Reese during a recent interview with KVOE regarding the district’s start to the 2020-21 spring semester. Reese says the district has had some minor issues with COVID-19 but, as Reese puts it, nothing “too serious.”
Reese praised the district and its families for the amount of work that went into preparing for the school year, specifically the work that went into developing and implementing mitigation strategies within school buildings. Reese says the only real challenge the district has seen thus far is dealing with the “political side” of the pandemic.
Reese went on to say the political atmosphere has not penetrated the schools themselves as they have had a high level of cooperation both from teachers, staff and students.
As for extracurricular activities, Reese says the district has followed all directives from the Kansas State High School Activities Association in terms of attendance protocols and other requirements. Overall he says the sports season has been quite a roller coaster ride up to this point but he is thankful KSHSAA altered its original decisions from last year and has allowed parents to still attend games in a limited capacity.
Right now Reese says it is unclear as to what is going to happen with athletics in the near future, however, the district will continue to adjust as is needed to ensure their student-athletes are able to complete their season as scheduled.
KVOE will continue to check in with area school districts on a regular basis as the remainder of the 2020-21 school year continues to unfold.
