The Emporia State womens basketball team had 4 players score in double-figures, 2 with career highs, in a 73-62 win over Missouri Southern Saturday.
Southern had an early 6-2 lead before the Lady Hornets went on a 9-0 run to take a lead they would never give up.
Emporia State led by as many as 19 points in the 2nd quarter. Southern cut the led to 6 in the 4th quarter before Emporia State closed out the game.
Fredricka Sheats scored a career-high 19 points making 5 three-point shots. Ehlaina Hartman added a career-high 17 points. Karsen Schultz finished with 15 points and Tre’Zure Jobe scored 12 points.
Emporia State Coach Toby Wynn said they needed a good offensive effort.
The win was also the 400th career win for Coach Wynn.
The Emporia State women are now 5-2 on the season. They are scheduled to play at Northwest Missouri State Tuesday.
Missouri Southern won the mens game 75-64.
There were 8 lead changes and 6 ties in the game.
Emporia State held an 8 point lead in the 1st half and trailed by 13 in the 2nd half.
Emporia State was their own worst enemy at times, turning the ball over 20 times, making 4 of 24 three-point shots, and hitting 4 of 9 free throws.
Emporia State Coach Craig Doty said they put too much stress on the offense.
Jumah’Ri Turner led Emporia State with 20 points. Austin Downing added 11 points and Mayuom Buom finished with 10 points.
The Emporia State men are now 6-5 for the season. They are next scheduled to play next Saturday when they host Washburn.
