Despite some high winds across the KVOE listening area, there was no fire activity Friday.
Emporia had the highest wind gust in the area at 59 mph. That was also the highest wind gust in the National Weather Service Topeka forecast area and tied Johnson City for the sixth-highest gust across Kansas. Elkhart had the state’s peak wind gust at 65 mph.
The threshold for low-end severe thunderstorm activity, by comparison, is 58 mph.
Eureka also noted a peak wind gust of 52 mph.
This follows Thursday’s gusty weather, where Emporia had a peak gust of 53 mph and several area communities had gusts above 40 mph. Wind conditions will still be occasionally breezy for the weekend, but expected gusts will be as high as 25 mph both Saturday and Sunday.
