Progress is on track so far for a major water line improvement project in parts of Emporia.
Work began last month on a water line improvement effort along Elm Street from West Sixth to Newman Regional Health. According to City Engineer Jim Ubert, work should be wrapping up soon on Sixth Ave with piping being laid between Sixth and Seventh.
According to Ubert the next section of work on Ninth Avenue from Elm to Lawrence has been drilled, however, no piping has been laid as of yet. Ubert says the project is scheduled to take roughly three months and did hit some snags at the beginning.
Ubert tells KVOE News the line being installed is a back feed to Newman’s emergency room and the work is being conducted to shore up services to the facility to ensure there are no disruptions due to infrastructure. Ubert says the original line was getting close to its end of life and the city has experienced one major break on the 12 inch line in the past two to three years.
Lane shifts and road closures will continue for the remainder of the project. Drivers are asked to find alternate routes of travel if possible and to exercise caution as they move through work areas.
