This week, the Department of Veterans Affairs has started giving area veterans doses of the coronavirus vaccine.
Spokesman Joseph Burks says doses of the Moderna vaccine are being administered in both Leavenworth and Topeka.
Veterans will get robocalls to gauge interest in appointments. Those that say yes will get a second phone call in 72 hours or less to schedule appointments.
The first shipment of vaccines arrived at the VA on Dec. 23, and the department began administering the doses that day. Over 1,000 employees have been vaccinated as well as residents at the Community Living Center in Topeka.
Burks says coronavirus led to a “tough year” for the department. Over 300 veterans are getting outpatient care at this time and five are receiving inpatient care. Close to 20 staffers are also sick with COVID and four veterans have died for the northeast Kansas region. He says staff have gone “above and beyond,” taking on additional responsibilities and placing a much bigger emphasis on virtual health. Burks says patient traffic has increased slightly since the coronavirus pandemic started.
