Starting Monday, applications will be accepted for the state’s Low-Income Energy Assistance Program.
Commonly known as LIEAP, the program offers a yearly benefit for qualifying households needing help paying their winter heating bills. Families with children, older adults and people with disabilities are the main groups receiving help. Last year’s effort offered an average benefit of $960 to around 34,000 households.
Applicants must be responsible for direct payment of their heating bills. They also need to have made payments for two of the past three months, with payments of at least $80 or the total balance due, whichever is less.
The help is based on household income and household size, as well as type of residence, type of heating fuel and utility rates. Financial eligibility is based on 130 percent of the federal poverty level.
