Moderate snowfall has concluded in the KVOE listening area after dumping anywhere from three to five inches in the area with minor ice accumulations throughout the morning and afternoon hours Friday.
The day’s precipitation began with sleet around 4 am before giving way to snowfall around 7 am. 4 inches of snow fell at KVOE and throughout Emporia on top of a thin glaze of ice.
TV-13 meteorologist Doug Meyers says ice accumulations were less than originally anticipated making driving easier than first thought. However; most area highways including US Highway 50 are experiencing seasonal driving conditions after all area highways were completely covered through the early half of Friday.
Interstate 35 remains completely covered with a handful of slide-off accidents reported throughout the day. No injuries have been reported.
Temperatures won’t change much in the coming days remaining in the low to mid 30’s through Saturday. Meyers says a combination of melting snow through the day Saturday coupled with evening lows in the 20’s will create concerns of refreezing through the weekend possibly into the upcoming work week.
Residents are still encouraged to limit travel as county and city road crews continue working to clear major arterial, heavily-traveled residential collectors and side streets with occasional slick spots reported throughout the day.

New Years Day Noon: WEATHER: Snow totals approaching 3 inches in Emporia; Slick conditions continue areawide.
It is slow going across the KVOE listening area with light to moderate snowfall continuing.
Sleet started the process around 4 am and changed over to snow around 7 am. Around 3 inches of snow has fallen at KVOE along with a thin glaze of ice underneath.
TV-13 meteorologist Doug Meyers says snowfall may taper off by mid- to late afternoon, and he says local accumulations may be around 3-5 inches with locally higher totals. He says the area got a bit of a break with less icing than first thought.
City streets, whether they are the major arterials, more heavily-traveled residential collectors or side streets, have been slick throughout. Area highways have been completely covered by a snow-ice mix since around 9:15 am and there have been a handful of slideoffs on the Kansas Turnpike. So far, no injuries have been reported.
County Engineer Chip Woods is keeping the advice simple today:
Other issues have developed elsewhere in the KVOE listening area. The city of Madison said it had issues with its snowblade, so snow clearing has been delayed.
