Lyon County will get almost $10,000 to bolster emergency food and shelter programs through a federal government program.
The United Way of the Flint Hills says the county can take advantage of the funding through the Department of Homeland Security and Federal Emergency Management Agency. The selection came through a national board involving FEMA and representatives of the American Red Cross, Catholic Charities USA, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, Jewish Federations of North America, Salvation Army and United Way Worldwide.
Now that the decision has been made on the amount, a local board involving the United Way of the Flint Hills, Emporia Rescue Mission, American Red Cross, Catholic Charities and other nonprofits will figure out how to distribute the money locally. Agencies chosen for funding must be private nonprofit or government units, be eligible to receive federal funds, have an accounting system, practice nondiscrimination, have a demonstrated capacity to deliver emergency programs and — if a private nonprofit — have a voluntary board.
Nonprofits and government units meeting these criteria are encouraged to apply for funds by calling the United Way at 342-7564 or emailing hannah@uwfh.org by Jan. 20.
