Progressive thinking at the city level that began over a decade ago is getting set to pay dividends in the coming months.
The city has approved and is getting set to begin major improvements to three local parks in the community following approval by city commissioners earlier this month. During KVOE’s Talk of Emporia Wednesday morning, City Manager Mark McAnarney joined the program and stated the projects will include work at Fremont, East Side and the All Veterans Memorial parks.
McAnarney says the work will be partially funded by a $500,000 drawdown from the Lake Kahola fund. McAnarney says this funding source was made possible due to the forward-thinking of past city commissioners.
The work at Fremont will see the installation of a new playground at a cost of approximately $100,000. For Eastside plans are to add equipment to the existing playground area with that work costing roughly $50,000.
Work at the All Veterans Memorial will see the completion of a circle walkway to provide additional space for more tablets in the coming years. The cost for that work is around $130,000.
An exact timeline for the work is not currently available, however, the hope is for work to begin and conclude in early to mid-spring.
