The very high grass fire danger evident all week did not materialize Wednesday like it did Monday or Tuesday despite winds approaching severe thunderstorm level in Lyon County.
Winds gusted as high as 54 mph at the Emporia Municipal Airport early Wednesday, just below severe storm strength at 58 mph, and gusts were between 40-50 mph for much of the day.
Monday’s grass fire near Roads 300 and J is still under investigation at last word. The fire rekindled Tuesday. The fires combined to burn up to 850 acres of grass and destroy two vehicles.
The fire danger will remain high to very high Thursday. Osage County is in a burn ban until further notice, while Wabaunsee County is a burn ban until at least Friday morning.
