An investigation continues after a destructive grass fire Monday.
Emporia Fire was called out to the junction of Roads 300 and J, about 12 miles north of Emporia, around 3:30 pm. The fire damaged about 60 acres of grass and also destroyed two vehicles before it was finally put out.
Several area agencies responded, including Allen-Admire, Americus, Dunlap and Reading along with Lyon County deputies. It took about three hours to get the fire under control.
Deputies are investigating the cause.
The fire danger is very high areawide Tuesday with temperatures in the mid-60s, dry grasses and south winds gusting as high as 45 mph. Red flag warnings have been issued for Chase and Greenwood counties until 4 am Wednesday triggering automatic burn bans in both counties for the duration of those warnings.
Wabaunsee County is in a burn ban until at least Friday morning, while Osage County is in a burn ban until further notice.
The fire danger will likely remain high Tuesday night as winds shift to the west but remain as high as 30-40 mph. High fire danger may well continue Wednesday as northwest winds are expected as high as 40 mph.
