Area lawmakers are taking leadership roles in the Kansas House.
Speaker Ron Ryckman appointed 51st District Representative Ron Highland of Wamego to chair the Water Committee. 60th District Representative Mark Schreiber of Emporia will serve as vice chair of the Energy, Utilities and Telecommunications Committee. Eric Smith of Burlington, serving the 76th District, will be vice chair of the Agriculture Committee.
Other committee assignments for the trio:
Schreiber will serve on both Education and Judiciary. Highland will serve on Commerce, Labor and Economic Development; and on Taxation. Smith will serve on Federal and State Affairs; Corrections and Juvenile Justice.
Meanwhile, 17th District Senator Jeff Longbine will chair the Financial Institutions and Insurance committees. He will also be on the Federal and State Affairs Committee.
