Governor Laura Kelly stayed within her administration as she announced her intent to have Commerce Secretary David Toland become her next lieutenant governor.
Toland has been Kelly’s Commerce secretary since she took office two years ago, and Kelly says he will serve in both roles for at least the time being. Toland has worked under one-time Washington, DC, mayor Anthony Williams in planning and economic development roles. He also was the first CEO of Thrive Allen County, a nonprofit coalition improving economic conditions in that county, before joining the Commerce Department.
Toland’s appointment came after Kelly chose current Lieutenant Governor Lynn Rogers to replace Jake LaTurner as State Treasurer. Both will be sworn in next month.
