Three local families were the benefactors of a generous undertaking by students and staff of William Allen White Elementary School Tuesday.
During a special presentation outside the school, staff presented two of their school families with checks containing funds generated through a recent virtual 5K fundraiser organized by staff and students of the school. The generous offerings were given to Chris Allen a library clerk at the school who has been recently battling cancer and is currently on the waiting list for a kidney donation.
Additionally, the family of WAW student Marisol Marin received a donation to assist with travel and treatment for Marisol who is also currently battling cancer. Upon receiving the donation, Allen stated she was simply overwhelmed by the love demonstrated by her school community.
Veronica Marin, Marisol’s mother says the donation is a major blessing to her family and will go along away in assisting the family as Marisol continues her battle.
WAW fourth grade teacher Kathy Dorcas had the original idea for the 5K fundraiser and helped to organize other staff and students throughout the effort. During the presentation, WAW Principal Tell Kirk used the term “school family” many times.
Dorcas says that statement truly embodies how all staff and students feel about one another at the school.
The third recipient of the funds was Petra Williams who was unable to attend Tuesday’s presentation. In total, more than $11,600 was raised for each of the benefiting families.
