A suspect is in custody following a high speed pursuit that made its way through Emporia before ending in the northwest part of the city.
According to Kansas Highway Patrol Lt. Rick Wingate the suspect vehicle, a 1993 Chevrolet pickup truck, was reported stolen earlier in the day. The vehicle was later spotted traveling southbound on the Kansas Turnpike at milepost 140 just before 4:30 pm.
KHP then initiated the pursuit but had to disengage shortly thereafter due to the potential for an accident as the driver of the suspect vehicle was allegedly driving erratically. The vehicle was later spotted at 12th and Graphic Arts in Emporia around 4:40 pm which is when the Emporia Piolice Department became involved in the pursuit.
The suspect vehicle allegedly struck a parked vehicle at 15th and Rural before crashing at 23rd and Hillcrest. The suspect was apprehended shortly thereafter and taken into custody by the Kansas Highway Patrol.
Formal charges through the Lyon County Attorney’s Office are pending. The suspects name has not been released.
