The federal Extended Benefits Unemployment Program is ending next month for Kansas residents who lost their jobs during the pandemic.
The US Department of Labor says Kansas has officially “triggered off” the program, which offered up to 13 additional weeks of compensation at the same amount of a person’s normal unemployment compensation. The last payable week will be the week ending Dec. 12.
The Kansas Department of Labor cannot make any additional payments, regardless of whether residents have remaining balances for extended benefits.
The Labor Department is reaching out to impacted claimants to let them know of this change. It also says they might be eligible for help through the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program, which has been aimed at helping self-employed workers, independent contractors, so-called “gig” workers, employees of religious organizations and people who do not have a long enough work history or who have been disqualified for state benefits but still have been affected by the pandemic.
