Walnut’s annual Turkey Day Dash is still on the schedule this year, however, it won’t be taking place in its usual format.
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has forced the Turkey Day tradition, like many other events this year, to go virtual. The race will officially begin Wednesday and continue through Sunday with registration available through the Emporia Recreation Commission.
Those wishing to participate will need to create an account on the website in order to register for the event. Walnut Principal Jami Dakin says with recent health ordinances passed at the city and county levels they wanted the public to still be able to enjoy the holiday tradition, now in its tenth year, with those closest to them.
That being said, Dakin reminds residents they still need to adhere to best health practices while taking part in the race.
Dakin still encourages participants to dress up in their best Thanksgiving inspired costumes with awards being given to both the best single and family costumes. To take part in the costume contest simply take a picture of your or your family’s outfits and post it to the Walnut PTO Facebook page or tag the Turkey Day Dash in your post.
Proceeds from this year’s Turkey Day Dash will go to assist with improvements at Walnut, specifically painting lines for activities that promote social distancing and keep students active such as hopscotch and four square amongst others.
