Area residents offered their financial support to the seventh annual Match Day organized by the Emporia Community Foundation on Monday.
Director Becky Nurnberg credited the participating groups for doing a lot of legwork, especially with the coronavirus pandemic still ongoing. She also says she tried to be the first donor Monday.
This was the third year people could donate online at any time Monday. The Community Foundation did not use Flinthills Mall due to COVID, but it let people drive up to the foundation’s west entrance and donate by card or check. Among those donating at the Community Foundation office was former foundation director Shirley Antes.
Last year’s event generated a record $286,000 for 25 participating groups. Since the event started, over $1.1 million has been raised for 33 area groups. Board President Kay Lauer says there are several reasons why the event has a track record of success.
Over 20 area nonprofits and the Community Foundation’s Fund for the Future benefited from Match Day. Nonprofits will also benefit from the prorated $50,000 matching pool courtesy of the Clint Bowyer 79 Fund, Preston Trust, Reeble Endowed Fund, Trusler Foundation and Jones Testamentary Trust.
Group and overall totals won’t be announced until Dec. 1. KVOE will broadcast those totals from the Lyon County History Center.
