Nearly 2,000 small businesses — including several within the KVOE listening area — across Kansas will be receiving crucial funding from the state as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.
During a special Zoom conference Monday, Governor Laura Kelly announced that the state has managed to disburse over $37 million in funding through Small Business Working Capital grants. According to Secretary of Commerce David Toland, the majority of the businesses who applied for the funding — roughly 84 percent — were local retailers with an average of one to 10 employees.
He says these businesses are the “bread and butter” that drive local communities.
The funding allocated to these businesses will be used to cover payroll, rent and other expenses needed for a business to survive and thrive.
While close to 2,000 businesses are now receiving much-needed assistance, Governor Kelly says the need for more is very apparent. The governor, as well as Toland and Secretary of Transportation Julie Lorenz, would go on to implore leaders at the federal level to do everything within their power to pass a much needed second stimulus package.
Governor Kelly stated if a second package were to be passed, the state’s plan to utilize those funds would need to be “comprehensive” and address a number of pressing issues.
