Bushong held its veterans celebration with the second annual Home of the Brave event Saturday.
Activities included music, auction, church service, living history displays, military salute and a re-enactment of the “Battle of the Bocage,” which happened shortly after D-Day in France. It also included activities at the former Bushong State Bank, which will be the site of the North Lyon County Veterans Museum and Memorial Wall. Dianne Bedner-Smith and her husband, Gary, bought the bank over 18 months ago as a companion to the North Lyon County Veterans Memorial. She says the next phase of work is coming next spring.
The project will renovate the bank, which was chartered in 1916 but failed in 1932 during the Great Depression.
Meanwhile, there are still some components yet to install at the Veterans Memorial. Bedner-Smith says there are three stones — Korean War, Vietnam War and recent wars — that haven’t been installed. A timetable for that work hasn’t been announced. Bedner-Smith and other organizers were able to celebrate the end of fundraising, though, earlier this year.
