Newman Regional Health is being honored for its work to help babies and families exposed to opioids.
Vermont Oxford Network says the hospital is a “Center of Excellence in Education and Training for Infants and Families Affected by Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome.” This recognizes at least 85 percent of the hospital’s multidisciplinary care teams are taking part in the Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome Collaborative and have completed universal training.
Neonatal abstinence syndrome is another way of saying drug withdrawal syndrome for babies exposed to opioids while in the womb. These infants are more likely to have respiratory issues, difficulty feeding, low birthweights and extended hospital stays than babies who aren’t exposed.
Newman Regional Health says the collaborative approach reduces both the length of patient stay and the length of using pharmaceutical drugs.
