Veterans and current military service personnel were warmly treated on a cool Wednesday morning for Emporia’s 67th rendition of Veterans Day.
Holiday activities culminated with the annual memorial service at the All Veterans Memorial, which included the national anthem, Taps and a 21-gun salute.
The featured speaker, Retired Air Force Colonel and Emporia State graduate Dr. Robert Hicks, spent part of his time discussing the need for more religious education in state affairs as a whole. He also offered his perspective on what unites us as Americans: the Constitution.
Earlier, hundreds of people lined Commercial Street for the annual parade featuring around 40 entries. Activities started at Presbyterian Manor for a drive-thru breakfast before shifting downtown for the annual parade.
Activities continue this week for the All Veterans Tribute. The Veterans Artist Exhibit continues through Saturday at the Emporia Arts Center. The Quilts of Gratitude ceremony will be from 10 am to noon at the Fairgrounds Anderson Building and will be a drive-thru format.
