Unfounded complaints of voter fraud continue with the presidential election now a week old. There was no voter fraud in Lyon County’s general election, according to County Clerk Tammy Vopat.
There were 413 provisional ballots under consideration during Monday’s vote canvass in Lyon County, of which 290 were counted. The vast majority of those not counted, according to Vopat, were for voters who did not register in Lyon County or didn’t register at all in accordance with state law.
None of the initial results changed. Jeff Longbine was re-elected to the Kansas Senate 17th District and Mark Schreiber was re-elected to the Kansas House 60th District. It also means Doug Peck wins the Lyon County Commission Second District, but he may not take that post for several weeks. Slater needs to submit his resignation to Lyon County Republican party chair Peggy Mast, who will then set up a nominating commission for a name to be submitted to Governor Laura Kelly.
All Lyon County’s department heads — County Attorney Marc Goodman, County Clerk Tammy Vopat, Register of Deeds Wendy Weiss, Sheriff Jeff Cope and Treasurer Sharon Gaede — were easily re-elected.
Over 14,000 votes were cast in the general election, pushing the final voter turnout to 69.72 percent, the highest Lyon County has had in years.
Voters will have another election next year as city commission and school board candidates will be on the ballot.
