Lyon County Republicans had a strong night in Tuesday’s general election.
Senate Vice President and 17th District Senator Jeff Longbine won re-election, defeating Democrat Steve Vecchione 9,012-4,286. Longbine says he’s grateful for the support seen in Lyon County and across the district.
House 60th District incumbent Mark Schreiber defeated Democrat challenger Todd Maddox 5,540 votes to 3,710. Schreiber says coronavirus is getting a lot of headlines now, but the budget is a central focus when the session begins in January.
For the Lyon County Commission Second District, Republican Doug Peck defeated Democrat Ronald McCoy 3,166 votes to 2,070 to replace the retiring Dan Slater. Peck says his top priority will be county finances.
On the good side, turnout was strong in Lyon County, both for the advance vote and the official Election Day total. County Clerk Tammy Vopat says turnout was over 67 percent.
On the bad side, a computer glitch halted the counting for around three hours with roughly half the results counted. This was the first notable issue for the county’s voting computer system since it debuted in 2018, but Vopat called it a “minor setback” that was resolved so the counting could move forward.
Elsewhere, Congressman Roger Marshall will supplant the retiring Pat Roberts in the US Senate after beating Democrat Barbara Bollier. Republican Tracey Mann easily defeated Democrat Kali Barnett for the US House First District seat vacated by Marshall.
There are still mail ballots to count and, in Lyon County’s case, there are over 370 provisional ballots that are outstanding. Lyon County’s official vote canvass, where the totals will be certified, will take place Monday morning.
