Unless there’s a late change in direction, the Kansas National Guard will end its assignment helping Lyon County Public Health with COVID-19 testing later this month.
Lyon County Public Health Emergency Preparedness Director Jennifer Millbern says the National Guard has done a “wonderful” job helping Public Health administer coronavirus tests at Flint Hills Community Health Center. As the National Guard prepares to leave by the middle of the month, Public Health is adjusting its testing plan.
Testing availability has been important since the pandemic started in March. It remains to be seen whether there will be a spike in testing after Friday’s daily record of 45 new cases in Lyon County.
Besides the testing, the National Guard has been helping the Kansas Department for Children and Families operate the noncongregate housing at Hampton Inn and La Quinta since April. It’s unclear when that role will end and how long the hotels will be used in that capacity.
