A rather miserable weather day continues across the KVOE listening area.
Light snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain have been falling at times since around 8 am. City crews were out to treat streets briefly when it was sleeting after 8 am, but they halted when the sleet changed to a cold rain because the salt being used would wash off and lose its effectiveness. Lyon County crews have been treating intersections, elevated surfaces and curves with a sand-salt mix. County Engineer Chip Woods says there is more hit-and-miss icing with this storm than normal, so drivers need to be aware of their surroundings.
Areawide, seasonal driving conditions are found on most area highways. However, Kansas Highway 177 south of Cottonwood Falls is completely covered. US Highway 50 west of Saffordville, US Highway 56 west of Admire and K-177 between Cottonwood Falls and Council Grove are all partly covered as of midday.
Winter weather advisories are up for Lyon, Coffey and Osage counties until 1 pm. Advisories for Chase and Greenwood counties are now in an advisory until 3 pm.
Wednesday could see a cold rain — and a lot of it. The National Weather Service has Chase and Greenwood counties in a flood watch from noon Wednesday to noon Thursday for the prospect of 1-3 inches of rain and locally higher amounts. The Weather Service expects river flooding and minor lowland flooding could be possible.
