Burlington Police are reminding people to be mindful of scam activity after a resident wound up on the wrong side of crooks last week.
Officers say a man was scammed out of almost $5,500 y somebody posing as an IRS agent. The scammer said the victim had a warrant for his arrest and was directed to buy gift cards before calling back with card information. The victim alerted authorities after buying the cards, and by the time the investigation started the cards were spent.
The IRS will not initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text message or social media channels to get personal or financial information. If you use gift cards to avoid alleged trouble with government agencies or law enforcement, you have been scammed.
