Judge Amy Coney Barrett is officially joining the US Supreme Court.
The Senate confirmed Barrett on a party-line vote Monday and she then took the constitutional oath. She will officially be sworn in Tuesday after taking a judicial oath.
The Kansas Congressional delegation representing Lyon County is pleased with Barrett’s confirmation. Senator Jerry Moran called her “the most impressive nominee I have interviewed and considered during my time on the Senate.” Outgoing Senator Pat Roberts says, “she will continue to be faithful to the US Constitution and serve America with distinction for many years to come.” Congressman Roger Marshall, running for Roberts’ seat, says Barrett “represents Kansas values, is a woman of faith and character and is eminently qualified to serve on our nation’s highest court.”
Democrats objected throughout the process, accusing Republicans of playing politics with the court when they held up Merrick Garland’s nomination process while Barack Obama was president.
After serving on the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals and also as a law professor at Notre Dame, Barrett becomes just the fifth woman to serve on the US Supreme Court. Her confirmation gives conservatives a 6-3 majority on the high court. She is President Donald Trump’s third justice appointment, following Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh.
