Lyon County had a double-digit day for new COVID-19 cases, and although the active case number declined, the number of active clusters increased.
Lyon County Public Health says the county had 11 new cases Friday. There were 15 recovered patients, pushing the active caseload from 65 to 61.
A second school cluster was announced Friday. All told, the category has nine total cases, seven of which are active. USD 253 Emporia has three staff and three students recently infected this week. It is also listing a situation where an employee tested positive at Emporia Middle School, forcing Principal Steve Bazan, Assistant Principals Jacob Linnell, Keith Glotzbach and Emily Baker, another employee and a student to do their work remotely. The cluster for colleges and universities has 72 total cases and five active cases.
There are 39 deaths in Lyon County due to coronavirus. One death is awaiting final cause from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
