Emporia resident and local veteran Aaron Bura was received special recognition Monday evening after spending the past 50 years as a devoted member of the National Association of Letter Carriers.
Bura, born in 1923 on a farm near Ramona, enlisted in the Army back in 1942. During his tenure, Bura held the rank of Technical Sergeant as part of the 13th Air Corps, a squadron with which he flew 35 missions.
Bura was injured in combat in 1944 while on a bombing mission in Indonesia for which he received the Purple Heart. Bura left the service in March of 1945 and met his wife of 64-years Mildred.
Bura began his time at the post office in August of 1961 and retired in July of 1987. Bura summed up Monday’s special ceremony in one word, humbling.
Bura has been a member of the NALC union since 1969 having previously served as the local Branch 185 Steward for a time. Current Branch 185 President Tim Dugan made the presentation Monday recognizing Bura’s 50 years of membership.
He says it was an honor to pay respects to an individual who laid the foundation for what he and other mail carriers have today.
As part of Monday’s ceremony, Bura received his lifetime membership Gold Card, a special pin and a letter from NALC National President Fredric V. Rolando.
