Members of the Emporia Fire Department’s Honor Guard had an experience they won’t soon forget as they presented the colors before the Kansas City Chiefs took on the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.
Aside from the end result of the game — a Chiefs loss — unit commander Rich Johnson says “it was excellent.”
The unit had to go through the now-standard COVID-19 screening procedures, including a short questionnaire and temperature check. From there, they were escorted to the stadium and performed shortly before kickoff.
This was the first large-scale event for the unit, which has performed for several high school and Emporia State events since it was formed in 2018. Johnson tells KVOE News the Honor Guard plans to be involved in the Veterans Day and Christmas parades before the year is done.
