EMP Shield inventor and executive engineer Tim Carty is understandably pleased to oversee the “Coolest Thing Made in Kansas,” according to the Kansas Manufacturing Council.
Based in Burlington, EMP Shield is the first defense system in the world for home, business or electric grid from a high-altitude electromagnetic threat. It also offers power surge and lightning-related surge protection. Carty says “it’s neat to be honored,” and he says the shield is vitally important in this day and age.
EMP Shield took the top honors in the Kansas Manufacturing Council’s competition. The product had its origin back in the 1850s, when the so-called Carrington Event geomagnetic storm caused widespread failures in telegraph systems over North America and Europe.
Carty says EMP Shield has been working with several federal agencies, including the Departments of Defense, Energy and Homeland Security, as it prepares to test a nationwide electric grid defense shield.
Over 50 products were nominated.
