The Emporia High football team suffered a heartbreaking 21-14 loss to Washburn Rural Friday night.
The Spartans scored 1st on a 1-yard touchdown run by Bobby Trujillo which was set up by Camden Kirmers 89 yard kick-off return on the game-opening kick-off. Washburn Rural would score on two long touchdown passes of 31 and 59 yards to take a 14-0 lead.
Emporia High would tie the game on a 50-yard touchdown run by Camden Kirmer in the 2nd quarter.
The teams were scoreless until Washburn Rural scored the game-winner with 16 seconds to play.
Coach Corby Milleson said he was proud of this team’s effort and the difference was about 5 plays.
The Spartans fall to 2-3 for the season they will host Topeka Seaman next Friday.
