Close to $1.7 million is going to Emporia State University’s TRIO program to help students graduate over the next five years.
The US Department of Education finalized the funding earlier this month.
TRIO currently offers services for over 160 students per year and has helped over 1,200 students graduate from the university since the program began. Between 60 and 65 percent of students in the Emporia State program graduate in four years, well above the national average of 30 percent.
TRIO works with on-campus college students, but it also works with middle school and high school students as they move through their pre-college coursework.
Grant money will bolster academic tutoring, financial aid assistance, career or college mentoring and other success-based programs.
