While the 2020 Census deadline may have been altered, the work of local Kansas Count workers is not slowing down.
Kansas Count Committee members Rob Gilligan and Robin Newell joined KVOE’s morning show Monday to discuss the ongoing effort. Gilligan says at this time Lyon County has a self-response rate of around 66.5 percent, which is on par to match the 2010 rate of 68 percent.
With the Census deadline now extended to Halloween, following a ruling by a federal judge in California last week, Gilligan says they are currently focused on ensuring residents know they have more time to respond. Newell says at this time enumerators are out and about ensuring everyone in the local community is counted.
She reminds listeners that having an accurate Census count affects the amount of funding and resources the state receives from the Federal Government over the next decade.
Gilligan says those resources have a major effect on how a community grows and develops over that period of time.
