Construction on a major roadway in Emporia has officially concluded with still more work to come in around town.
Emporia City Engineer Jim Ubert recently spoke with KVOE News and stated that construction on 12th Ave. and Burlingame Road wrapped up recently. The project included asphalt surfacing on Burlingame from 12th to Riley, while 12th saw surfacing work from Mary to Whittier.
Ubert says the work was desperately needed in the area as the asphalt was roughly 45-50 years old and had seen little to no maintenance in recent years. Ubert says not addressing the surface issues could have led to deeper underlying issues with the roadway in the future.
Ubert says the work done on the roadway will help extend its life and save the city money in the long run.
The project is one portion of the city’s annual street rehabilitation project that may be wrapping up by next week at the earliest according to Ubert. Ubert says some work is still remaining on four streets surrounding Peter Pan Park with patchwork coming on Randolph in the next few days. Street construction also continues on several streets near Industrial Park III.
