Friday is the 19th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks that destroyed the World Trade Center, heavily damaged the Pentagon and resulted in a plane crash outside Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
There will be a local remembrance ceremony Friday morning as a partnership between the American Legion Riders Post 5 and local first responders.
Activities start at the Lyon County Law Enforcement Center, 425 Mechanic, at 7:30 am with opening remarks. Following remembrances of the north World Trade Center attack at 7:46 am and the south tower attack at 8:03 am, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt will offer remarks before another brief remembrance of the attack on the Pentagon at 8:45 am. There will be a flagged motorcycle escort to Fire Station 2, 1415 Industrial, for a remembrance of the Flight 93 crash. Closing remarks will take place at 9:10 am.
People attending need to at least bring a mask or face covering and wear them if social distancing can’t be maintained. Residents who are sick are told to stay home. People are also encouraged to be ready for cold weather or rain, depending on the forecast. Flags will be available to hold, courtesy of the American Legion Riders.
