The state’s coronavirus-related disaster declaration ends next Tuesday, and Governor Laura Kelly would like it extended.
The governor made her announcement during her weekly news conference.
This follows compromise legislation approved by lawmakers and signed by Kelly after a special session back in June. The package extended the declaration from June to Sept. 15, but Kelly needs the Finance Council OK to extend the declaration through Sept. 30. There is currently no word on when the board will take up the issue.
Part of the compromise also forces Kelly to get Finance Council approval to spend any of the federal COVID-19 relief money. Another part of the compromise has Kelly needing permission from the Kansas State Board of Education to close schools by executive order.
