Tuesday will see a lot of updates on the local and area coronavirus situation.
Lyon County entered the Labor Day weekend with 913 total cases since March, up from 870 on Aug. 31. The number of active cases is at 98 after dipping as low as 83 this past Wednesday, and the number of deaths climbed last week from 17 to 19. Currently, there are 15 deaths awaiting final classification on cause from Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
Lyon County, which is 17th in population statewide, remains 10th in raw COVID-19 infection numbers since the pandemic started. The state’s two most populous counties have the most cases. Johnson County leads the state with over 9,000 cases, based on the latest information from KDHE. Sedgwick County is second with over 7,700 cases. When the numbers for Lyon and all surrounding counties are considered, the total caseload is at 1,271 and the active case count is at 163 as of Friday’s data.
While Tuesday will be a significant day for reporting data, given the Labor Day weekend, Wednesday will be a big day for another reason. KDHE will start naming cluster sites on its COVID-19 reporting dashboard. This will include cluster sites with at least five confirmed cases — except for private businesses, where at least 20 confirmed cases per location would be needed. The number of cases associated with each location will also be listed.
