Emporia firefighters put out a small grass fire on the west edge of town Saturday.
The fire developed along Road G, or Americus Road, in the 1800 block and was reported shortly before 11 am. Fire Capt. Ryan Conley says the fire stayed in a ditch and was relatively small, approximately 200 yards long and 10-15 feet wide. Firefighters also kept the fire well away from any structures in the area.
Early indications are the fire may have started after careless discard of smoking materials or a vehicle equipment malfunction. No injuries were reported.
A smaller fire started north of Olpe shortly before 2:45 pm Saturday. Conley says the fire near the intersection of Kansas Highway 99 and Road 90, about 1.5 miles north of Olpe, only burned an area of 300 to 500 square feet. Discard of smoking materials is a possible cause but an investigation continues into the incident. As was the case in the Americus Road grass fire, no injuries were reported.
