September is National Disaster Preparedness Month, and Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt says many scammers are using this as an opportunity to profit from the generosity of others.
Schmidt says there are many steps Kansans should take to avoid getting scammed. These include only donating to established organizations with a strong record of organizing or providing disaster relief. Verifying that social media fundraisers are legitimate. Avoiding giving donations to door to door solicitors. Going directly to the charity website to give your donation. Also verifying that the charity is registered to solicit in the state by visiting www.kscharitycheck.org.
