With flu season coming and coronavirus already here, local health officials are urging residents to get their flu shots as soon as possible.
Nurse Melissa Smith says Flint Hills Community Health Center is making plans — and adjustments — for the upcoming flu season.
Newman Regional Health Chief Executive Officer Bob Wright has told KVOE News hospital bed space could be overwhelmed if there are simultaneous spikes in both flu and COVID-19 this fall and winter.
Smith says people can develop both flu and COVID at the same time, and she it would be “very detrimental” to people to get both simultaneously.
Local health officials are also closely watching for illnesses that traditionally hit at the start of the school year, including strep throat, to see whether patient admissions increase in light of COVID.
