The US Department of Health and Human Services has already passed out over $44 million in CARES Act relief to Kansas as part of the coronavirus recovery process, and it’s awaiting word from Congress on additional funding.
Great Plains Regional Administrator Jason Mohr joined KVOE’s 8:05 am newscast Friday as part of a full day of meetings and conversations with Emporia city officials and community stakeholders. Mohr says COVID-19 makes it difficult to gauge the effectiveness of the federal relief effort, at least for now.
Earlier this summer, HUD awarded Kansas almost $15 million as part of an Emergency Solutions grant to help set up housing for homeless residents as well as giving them resources for stable housing situations. HUD has also helped through Community Development Block Grants, Emergency Solutions grants and Housing Opportunities for Persons With AIDS.
Mohr has spent his time in town discussing current initiatives and learning what issues matter most. He also says HUD money so far has been helping businesses adjust to the pandemic.
