Wednesday marks 100 years since the passing of the 19th amendment which gave women the right to vote within the United States.
As such, the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, like many institutions across the state and country, will be commemorating the anniversary with a special ceremony. Tallgrass Preserve Spokesperson Heather Brown says the historic house and barn on the property will be lit up Wednesday evening with the three colors that represent the Women’s Suffrage movement.
The Women’s Suffrage movement spanned over 70 years with notable activists taking up the fight throughout the years including Susan B. Anthony, Alice Paul, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucy Stone and Ida B. Wells. The movement culminated with the certification of the 19th amendment on Aug. 26 1920.
Residents are invited to attend the lighting ceremony at the Tallgrass Preserve, however, Brown asks that everyone practice social distancing and best health practices will in attendance to limit the possibility of COVID-19 spread. The lighting ceremony is set to take place around 8 pm Wednesday evening.
