The Topeka School board voted Thursday night to postpone the start of the 2020 football season by at least a week due to COVID-19, but remain hopeful of playing this fall.
The Topeka Capital Journal reported that the board approved a recommendation by district administration to delay football at Highland Park, Topeka High and Topeka West until it re-evaluates the situation on Sept. 3, but the Topeka schools still plan to start fall sports cross country, volleyball, girls tennis and golf and boys soccer on time.
Emporia High scheduled to host Topeka Hayden in their season opener.
Hayden is not a member of the Topeka School District.
The Spartans are slated to play Topeka West in Topeka in week 2.
The Wichita School district has canceled all fall sports.
The Wichita Eagle reports that Thursday’s decision means November 30 is the earliest that Wichita Public Schools will see any high school competition
